U.S. is top wine consuming country by volume, Italy leads per capita

The 13th annual International Wine and Spirits Research report found that Americans drank almost 340 million 9-liter cases of wine in 2014. Italians drink the most wine per person, though the rate is expected to drop.

New figures have been released on global wine consumption habits, revealing that the U.S. is the biggest market in terms of total volume, while Italians drink the most vino per person.
In the 13th annual International Wine and Spirits Research report, commissioned by wine trade show Vinexpo, analysts found that American oenophiles tipped back the most wine in terms of volume, emptying 339.6 million 9-liter cases in 2014.
And while Italians drink the most wine per person, tipping back an average of 48.1 liters in 2014, that trend is expected to drop a precipitous 6% by 2018.
