When Barack Obama steps down as US president in January, his legacy will embrace not just healthcare, gun control and the escalating use of military drones, but also arguably the elevation of godello, an obscure white wine from northwest Spain.
Peza do Rei, produced by the Adega Cachin winery in Galicia’s Ribeira Sacra region, became known as “Obama’s wine” after the president was pictured with a glass at a gala held by the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute in Washington DC last September. It apparently sparked a buying spree by restaurants and consumers and piqued the interest of investors.
