Spanish oenologist Álvaro Palacios was awarded the Winemaker 2008 trophy in the best young winemaker category, by the Grand Jury Europeén (GJE), in Stuttgart.
The jury, composed of fifty European wine experts including sommeliers, oenologists and several of the most influential wine critics such as François Mauss, Michel Bettane and Víctor de la Serna, gave top marks to the work carried out by Palacios with indigenous grape varieties in the regions of Priorato, Bierzo and Rioja, and to his singular and full-character wines.
As a consequence, Álvaro Palacios was recognised for his work at the Gratallops bodegas, in Priorato, where he moved at the end of the 80s; in L’Ermita, in Bierzo, where, years later, he disembarked with his nephew Ricardo; and also for the marked personality he has bestowed on the wines made at the family bodega, Palacios Remondo in Rioja.
The Grand Jury Europeén du Vin (Grand European Wine Jury) trophies were awarded within the framework of the ArtVinum awards ceremony, held in the capital of the important German wine region of Badem- Wuerttemberg. Some of this edition’s prize-winners in other categories were the renowned US critic Robert Parker; Christine Vernay as 'young wine expert of the year' and Josef Hubert Graf von Neipperg, for his lifetime achievement.
